BJ’s Wholesale Club is looking to open its first Alabama location.

The Aug. 18 agenda for the Madison City Planning Commission includes information on a “big box” store at Town Madison north of Graphics Drive and east of Wall Triana Highway near Duluth Trading Co. The accompanying architectural rendering shows designs for a BJ’s Wholesale Club.

BJ’s Wholesale has not responded to AL.com’s request for comment.

Massachusetts-based BJ’s Wholesale operates some 229 locations in 17 states, mostly along the East Coast. The Madison location would be the first in Alabama. Each of its locations, according to the company’s website, employs about 150 people.

Like other warehouse clubs, BJ’s sells memberships ranging from $55 to $110 a year. The chain offers fresh food and a full-service deli as well as optical and tire services and on-site gas stations. BJ’s also bills itself as coupon friendly – it is the only major club that accepts manufacturers coupons, according to its website.

The chain currently has some 6.5 million members with $16.7 billion in annual revenue.
